How Working Without Pay Pays Off

How Working Without Pay Pays Off Volunteering is getting a good rep for being a great way to network. Putting down a year or two of volunteering experience shows HR staff that you’re a team player who cares about others. It doesn’t really matter if you tutored groups of inner city youth or sat by yourself and updated database spreadsheetsâ€"volunteering is equal to caring about people. If it is a real experience and you can talk about it enthusiastically, you’re more than a leg up past the competition. Non-profits are in need of volunteers. Perhaps people haven’t caught on, or maybe it’s because only those that actually do care are able to keep it up. Whatever the reason, there’s a need to be filled and more than a little to be gained out of stepping up to be that person. Want to save the rainforest or Bengal tigers? Whether you’re interested in saving animals, people or the earth, there’s a non-profit out there for you. However, if you’re looking to work in a no-kill pet shelter, be prepared for possible waiting lists since they’re some of the most popular places for students. If you’re wondering what to do with your newfound humanitarianism, there are a few ways to choose the non-profit that’s right for you. The first place to look is your career services department. If you’re a recent graduate, don’t hesitate to call them. If they can’t assist you, they’ll certainly point you in the right direction. But likely, they’ve seen countless volunteering opportunities run across their desk and haven’t had enough students to fill them. Even if you’re attending an online university, you should still check with your career services department. They’ll be in touch with national charities or may be able to match you up with a general non-profit theme based on your major, skills and talents. They may also be able to suggest roles that you could fill within local organizations. Where to find the volunteering role for you Websites like Volunteer Match can also help you identify your talents and where they would be best used at. They’re a great resource, but there are typically local ones as well that are easily accessible. And it’s a good idea to talk to your local United Way or even your local library to tap into a network of non-profits. If you think you’re unable to volunteer because of monetary concerns, contact your local chapter of AmeriCorps, an umbrella program that houses different chapters. Each chapter has a focus and may work with many different agencies or may be dedicated to just one non-profit. Those who serve with AmeriCorps get a monthly living stipend and an education reward upon successful completion of their term. If you’re not certain you can stick with something, AmeriCorps probably isn’t the right avenue for you, since the education award is a large motivator for most people. It can be used toward loans or directly sent to colleges. You still have to sell yourself (just not as hard) When you go to contact a non-profit, be prepared to sell yourself. They may take anyone to hand out food at a pantry, but if you want to apply your major and be more useful (as well as more marketable), you’re going to have to prove you’re worth the training and the responsibility. It’s the volunteer opportunities that line up with your major that are going to be the most useful. If you can show that you’re going to be an asset, there are organizations that will be willing to give you opportunities to gain the experience that you need showcased on your resume. If you go in with a nonchalant, ‘I’m just here to fill my time’ attitude, you’re going to be scrubbing up vehicles or mopping the floors. Just like any form of work, you want to show optimism and initiative. Volunteering not for you? Check out 3 Hot Tips to Finding the Job You Love instead! Author: Jesse Langley lives near Chicago. Team iPhone

Team iPhone I have  officially joined the ranks of iPhone users.   That is a statement I never thought I would say, especially since Ive been on Team Android for over three years.   Interestingly enough, I wanted an iPhone when it first came out, but of course I refused to switch from Verizon to ATT, so in the meantime, I met and fell in love with Android. Through the opinions of others who had an iPhone, I decided that I was good with Android, but I was still curious about the iPhone especially the 4S with the Siri functionality.   It also occurred to me that only I could determine how I would like the phone and I really needed to test it out. So considering I was up for an upgrade and keeping in mind, Verizons 14-day return policy, I decided to take the plunge.   I was worried though because I wondered if it would be easy to use. I wondered if I would miss the bigger screen (4.3 versus 3.5).   I wondered if I would miss the speed (4G versus 3G). After having the phone for a day, I still had not made up my mind…but fast forward six days later and I am hooked.   Why?   Because of Siri mainly.   I have her to remind me of stuff all the time and I use her to play music that I want to listen versus manually having to find it for myself.   Not to mention, she is quite funny.   Its a nice change. It is interesting how many of my friends reacted to my phone change.   They actually asked me who I was, what I had done with Jessica and told me that I had joined the dark side.   That just goes to show you that some people tie their identities and yours to a phone choice.   You are either on Team iPhone or Team Android or Team Windows.   This is how the term fanboys is most often used you can normally tell what phone team they are on. I say Android has its positives and so does the iPhone.   So I will be on whatever team gives me the best phone experience that I need at the time.  So even though I have an iPhone in my pocket right now, Im not on Team iPhone.  Im on Team Phone. How about you?   What team are you on?  Do you find that your identity is tied to your phone choice?

We especially liked that the company provides links to all of their third-party reviews at the top of t heir FAQ page. Transparency is a good thing.Cons: A little more differentiation between experience levels would have been nice. The top category was for professionals seeking salaries of $80k and up. An elite service just for six-figure earners would show they understand the level of care that these professionals need (even if it costs more).Turnaround: 3â€"6 days with rush service available.Cost: $149â€"500+ if you take advantage of their competitively priced infographic and/or headshot services.Phone: (602) 819-85289. The latter is a rare offering in the resume writing world.Pros: If you click on “Legal and Paralegal” on their Samples page, you will see four excellent legal resume writing examples.Cons: The extremely short turnaround times might not be a good thi ng. In certain cases, you may need your resume quickly. But you also want to know that a professional writer has spent sufficient time and care creating it. As such, this service might be better suited to junior attorneys with a shorter span of experience.Turnaround: 1â€"2 days.Cost: $305â€"485.Phone: (800) 845-0586Legal/Attorney Resume SamplesCurious to know what it takes to knock a legal/attorney resume out of the park? Choosing A Life You Love

Choosing A Life You Love We all know people whose lives just seem to work. They have successful careers. Healthy relationships. Super cool interests. They are happy a lot of the time. How do they do it? It isn’t that they are just incredibly lucky. They do the work to create lives that they love. They have a clear sense of who they are, what they value, and where they want to go in life.   And they then make deliberate choices every day that align with these factors. Connecting to who you are at your core requires looking at yourself. Getting real with yourself. You need to let go of ideas about what you “should” be doing and instead connect deeply to who you truly are and are not. That’s when you make an impact, and where you find fulfillment.   Here are three tips to help you create your ideal life, a life you love. Know your core values. What do you stand for? What sets you apart? What makes your heart beat? What do you bring to team meetings, conversations and decisions?   What do people count on you for?   Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They ideally determine your priorities, and, deep down, theyre probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is usually good â€" youre satisfied and content. But when these dont align with your values, thats when things feel wrong. This can be a real source of unhappiness. If you value family, but you have to work 70-hour weeks in your job, will you feel internal stress and conflict? And if you value collaboration, yet you work in a highly competitive sales environment, are you likely to be satisfied with your job? Choose 4 8 core values that are authentic and meaningful for you. Set goals. You will have the greatest probability of living a life you love if you know what it is that you want and you go after it. That’s where goals come in. Goals give you focus, inspiration and purpose. They help you get clear on the impact you want to make. A great practice   is to set 1-year, 5-year and 10-year goals for the various realms of your life that are important for you, such as professional, personal growth, health/wellness, relationship, financial. Make them audacious enough that it isn’t a given that you will achieve them, and will fail sometimes. That doesn’t make you a failure. That’s what it takes to live a big life! Check in with your goals on a quarterly basis and adjust so they continue to be a source of guidance. Choose ‘your people’ wisely. Be intentional with who you spend time with. Surround yourself with supportive people who want you to be happy and successful. Choose bosses, colleagues, mentors, coaches and friends who call you forth to be your best self, who love you enough to be straight with you and who give you space to grow, learn, fail and shine. Let them know your values and your goals, and ask them to help you be accountable to living in alignment with them. There is no single version of an ideal life. The key is for you to be clear on who you are at your core, set goals that are real and motivating to you (not to your boss, partner or parents), then make deliberate choices every day that allow you to be your best self and create a life you love. 8 Reasons Why Pursuing A College Degree Is Important CareerMetis.com

8 Reasons Why Pursuing A College Degree Is Important Photo Credit- Pexels.comUndeniably, education is critically important. When it comes to the most critical part of an individuals’ academic life, for many it’s their higher education.Although being in college is hard in many ways: financially, academically, personally and more, the returns studying for a college degree are frequently worth it. Obtaining a college degree is one way for students to stand out from others in a highly competitive job market. It can also help them fulfill their life goals and career aspirations. That does not mean it is for everyone, however. It is not the only way to success. Those individuals who choose to take other routes can, and often still do, achieve their goals, and find happiness and personal fulfillment.evalNonetheless, if you are unsure whether you should go for a college degree or not, here are a few reasons you might want to consider taking the plunge.1) It is a primary requirement for many jobsevalThe increased competition in the job marke t has made it difficult for young adults to get the most entry-level white collar jobs in almost every industry. That’s the reason why one in three adults is a graduate in the US. In major fields, including science and technology, education, and even for some business sectors, it has become all important for people to at least own a bachelor’s degree to start their careers with a reasonable job.Recent studies show that around 37 percent of jobs in the US require some post-high school education, while 21 percent required a bachelor’s degree. By 2020 it’s estimated that two-thirds of job openings will need post-secondary education or training in almost every â€" stated by the U.S Department of Education. Reasonable or not, in the coming years a college degree will be indispensable in securing employment opportunities.2) It helps in higher earningsThough any form of education you take is an investment you make for your future, a college education is the investment that usually offers the highest returns. In the US, college graduates earn 66 percent more than people with high school diplomas. On average, a college graduate makes around $68,000 per year which is almost $25000 higher than someone with a high school diploma or GED. With those figures, the lifetime average of a worker with a bachelor’s degree is approximately $1 million more than a worker with post-secondary education. There’s quite a jump in earnings from post-secondary education to a bachelor’s degree at college. This is what makes them very useful when it comes to having higher earning potential.3) It helps you prepare for a specific jobThe job market is continuously changing as world changes. Fields like technology, education, and health are ones that are rapidly growing, making it difficult for people to get the right job without having higher education degrees. Perhaps without a college degree in these fields, you may be seen as an undesirable candidate for a position in these fields . But with a college degree, you increase your chances to attract employers and get yourself a job interview.evalThis is primarily because your degree will help you learn the specific skills needed to make a living in these areas. It will help you get a direct route to a particular job and help you climb up your organizational hierarchy in a matter of time.4) It helps you to develop a networkThe time you spend in college is among the most useful one in your life. Not it helps you in creating lifelong friendships; it’s incredibly beneficial when it comes to building, and maintaining a professional network.Good networking is quite crucial for success in today’s competitive job market. And studying for a college degree can help you build one primarily because certain aspects of getting a college degree are designed to help you collaborate and communicate with other people in the same field. Often these people help you to develop your future and set you in the right direction for a lucrative career.A student studying for a degree in college can take advantage of various development sources that are accessible on their campus. Such as career counselors, job fairs, professors and even other students. All of them can help you develop a professional network.5) It enables you to get a promotionevalevalYou may be currently employed and enjoy working with your current employer, but time and again you find it hard to get a promotion. Yes, you may have all the necessary skills that it takes for a higher position in your organization’s ladder but what you may lack is a degree in your relevant field. This is when a college degree can help you manage to go higher on the ladder and get a promotion at your current job. It helps in erasing all your academic credential concerns and places you in the best position to achieve a higher position in your organization. Also, it enables you to overcome any competition with your peers for a promotion at a specific post you are inter ested in.6) It helps you sharpen communication and collaborative skillsCollege gives you the perfect ground to improve communication and cooperative skills, both necessary to get success in professional life. The time you spend in college communicating with others, eventually helps you to become an active and engaging communicator at the workplace.Along with growing verbal skills, you also learn how to work well with other individuals. Time at college is ideal for students to work in a collaborative environment. They can work with other students on different projects and polish their teamwork skill. Not only it can help in improving their collaborative skills but also help to assist their leadership qualities.7) It helps you to get personal growthIn case you are happy with your professional life and not looking for a career that comes from a four college degree, then you would probably question the value of your degree.Well, studying for a college degree is not only about higher ear nings, promotions, and a secure career. There is also more to it. College experiences can be pivotal to some when it comes to getting personal growth. For example, the experience can help you to acquire self-confidence, positive attitude, time management abilities, problem-solving skills and more.Further, it also helps you to get out on your own and make independent decisions in life. It assists you to determine and prioritize things that are important for your day-to-day life. Making you an intellectual individual â€" someone that can make good decisions on his or her own!8) It helps you get self-satisfaction and life satisfactionWhen you have a college degree under your belt, you feel proud and accomplished. You automatically feel an inner sense of satisfaction in life. It becomes easier to believe you can achieve your goals and ambitions in life. Beyond that, you rest assure that you are capable of achieving what you desire in life, and you have the degree to prove it.Also, when you are a well literate individual, you understand how to improve and maintain your mental well-being. When in college, you learn critical thinking and reasoning skills that stay with you for a lifetime. Both of them will help you in accessing more resources to live a better life when compared to when you are less educated.evalWherever your interest lies and whatever career you might want to pursue, there are reasons to pursue a college degree. A majority of them help in upward mobility in your career, a new opportunity to learn and grow financially and live a satisfactory life.

Why you should treat job interviews like sales meetings - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Why you should treat job interviews like sales meetings Guest post by John Fawkes   Here’s how job interviews usually go: you (the applicant) spend most of the time answering questions about yourself- what you’ve done, what you’re good at, what your biggest weakness is.   The interviewer drives the conversation, and you follow her lead.   In answering their questions, you either talk about what you’ve done at past jobs, or speak in general terms about what a great worker you are. Here’s how sales meetings usually go: the salesperson researches the buyer beforehand and prepares a pitch customized for that buyer.   He drives the conversation, asking probing questions in order to understand the buyer’s needs and tailor a solution for the buyer. The conversation ends up being mostly about the buyer, and instead of speaking in general terms about his product or service, or focusing on past customers, the salesperson emphasizes how his product or service can help the buyer, specifically. The salesperson, in short, succeeds by being well-prepared.   He does his research to understand the buyer’s needs like the back of his own hand, comes with a pitch customized to the buyer, and controls the flow of the conversation.   The people who are most successful in their careers treat job interviewing the same way, and you can too by following a three-step process of researching, preparing, and interviewing. Step 1: Become more informed than the other applicants   Before you can prepare your pitch, you need to know the company almost as well as its own employees do.   To start off with, read everything you can about the company, and particularly try to get a feel for what the company is doing in the particular department you’re applying for.  (Check out my video about informational interviews here) Next, you want to talk to current and former employees at the company- ideally one of each, but either one will put you light years ahead of most job seekers.   There are two good ways to do this: first off, you can ask all of your friends and contacts if they know anyone who works at your target company, or used to.   Second, you can use LinkedIn to reach out directly to people at your target company.   If you take this route, it helps to select people who you have some connection with, such as a mutual contact, or a person who went to the same school as you did or used to work at a company you’ve worked at. In either case, ask the person to meet with you for 20 minutes; for tea if possible, or otherwise over the phone.   Use this meeting to ask them questions about the company, acquire an inside perspective that most job applicants won’t have, and learn what challenges the company is currently facing and what skills are most in demand.   You can explain that you are exploring the possibility of working at that company in the future, but don’t ask your new contact for a job or any other favors yet; just ask for information. Step 2: Prepare a sales pitch   Now, thinking over what you learned at your meeting, identify the main challenges faced by the company, and the department you wish to apply to.   Then, figure out how your skill set and desired role would intersect with those challenges. Next, prepare 5-10 good questions to ask during the interview.   These should be questions which you honestly don’t know the answer to, and ideally questions you only know to ask because of what you learned from your contact(s). Finally, prepare 2-3 ideas for addressing the challenges and opportunities that you’ve identified at the company.   These ideas should be specific, they should be things you can do, or at least contribute towards, and you should have fleshed them out somewhat, with a rough timeline and action steps.   Print these ideas on a single sheet of paper to take to the interview. Having done all this, you can now apply for the job you want.   After doing so, let your contact know that you’ve applied for a job at their company, and that you’d appreciate if they would put in a good word for you.   This will dramatically improve your chances of getting an interview. Step 3:    Take control of your interview   Now, as soon as you get the chance, start taking control of the direction of the interview by discussing what you’ve learned about the company, and asking the questions you’ve prepared.   Answer any questions you’re asked, but don’t wait for them; instead, spend the first half of the interview showing that you understand the company’s needs. About halfway through the interview, tell them that you actually have a few ideas for the company, which you’d like to discuss.   Pull out the sheet with your ideas written on it, and start discussing them with the interviewers- discuss what you’d like to work on for your first few months, the benefits you think your ideas could bring, and ask for the interviewer’s feedback. This is how top performers land their dream jobs: while everyone else is spamming out resumes  and saying how they’re “highly motivated and skilled,” the best are building a network, over-preparing, and selling employers not just on themselves, but on a specific vision for their role at the company.   Not only will this get you the job (or even multiple offers), but in many cases this strategy, properly executed, can net you an immediate £5000 raise, as the hiring manager is practically salivating at all the money you’re going to make him. About the Author   John Fawkes helps professionals find their dream jobs by rapidly building a network and tapping the hidden job market through his blog, where he provides unconventional advice on job searches, work-life balance, and career advancement.   He also coaches a select group of clients seeking better jobs, and has published a free ebook, “The 12 mistakes keeping you from your dream job.”
